Brantwood Collection
Brantwood was home to Ruskin from 1872 to his death in 1900. His cousin Joan Severn and her family continued to live at Brantwood until the 1930’s. Over that period, many of Ruskin’s treasured paintings and belongings were sold. Following Joans husband’s death, an auction disposed of much of the remaining contents. The house was saved for the nation by John Howard Whitehouse, founder of Bembridge School and of the Birmingham Ruskin Society, who bought the house. He established the Brantwood Trust in 1951 to care for the property for posterity. In the years since, many of the furnishings and artwork have made their way back to the house, which has been lovingly restored to provide visitors with a genuine experience of visiting the home of it’s famous resident. Brantwood is a charity dedicated to caring for the buildings and collection, and sharing Ruskin’s life’s work through the collection and estate. All purchases made from Brantwood helps support our work caring for such an inspiring historic property.

“A book worth reading is worth owning”
Brantwood bookshop has a large selection of Ruskin-related titles. Whether your interest is in Ruskin’s own writing or an analysis of the great man and his work, there is a book on our shelves for you.
Ruskin Books
John Ruskin was a prolific writer, covering subjects as varied as geology, architecture, myth, ornithology, literature, education, botany, and political economy. If you wish to gain a broad overview of his writing, Selected Writings includes extracts from some of his major works, Modern Painters, Stones of Venice and Sesame and Lilies, as well as some less known writing. Written in the 1880’s whilst living at Brantwood, Ruskin’s autobiography Praeterita gives a fascinating account of his upbringing in a severely respectable Victorian household, his Continental travels, his friends and relations, and the development and refinement of his aesthetic tastes.
Ruskin related Books
Ruskin’s influence can be felt throughout the world today. His writings and philosophies influenced great leaders and artists, from Ghandi to Tolstoy, Edward Burne-Jones, William Morris and Marcel Proust. There was a steady increase in interest since the 1960’s and in 2019, Ruskinites around the world celebrated Ruskin’s bicentenary year with exhibitions, talks and a legacy of wonderful new books.
