Concert with Pianist Paul Turner
Our third 2024-2025 Concert is a performance by Paul Turner. We are delighted to welcome Paul to perform again in Brantwood’s Drawing Room. The ambience of a private drawing room affords the opportunity to meet the musicians and observe at close quarters the technique, interpretation and expertise of their performance in this most exquisite of venues. Paul Turner is a widely experienced soloist and chamber music player renowned for his sensitive playing “Thank you Paul for a truly wonderful concert! Your playing was amazing and beautiful, and it was a joy to be so close to it! I do hope we’ll see you again soon!”(Lucy Hollins, conductor) He excels in a wide range of genres as demonstrated in recent events, which include: performances of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Concerto in F; his National Theatre debut with Maria Ewing in a celebration for the life of Sir Peter Hall; the Ralph Vaughan Williams festival with Jack Liebeck and members of the Sacconi Quartet; Kings College Cambridge with Nicholas Daniel during Easter week; Ligeti ‘Hommage a Brahms’ with Martin Owen; recording with Miranda Dale for the Proust Society and a new collaboration with BBC Young Musician of the Year finalist, saxophonist Robert Burton.
Following a series of solo concerts in contemplation and celebration of returning to live events, and a number of livestream concerts for Benslow Music Trust (Chopin Nocturnes, Enigma14, and Peter Bussereau), Paul has been involved in some other recording projects. They include ‘Ithaka’ by Lydia Kakabadse with Clare McCaldin (divine art), Paul Carr ‘I Offer You Love’ (Stone Records) and ‘Roads to Freedom’ (a reaction to the war in Ukraine) by Anastasia Pavlyk, written for Paul. Live events include performances of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, further presentations of Ligeti’s Hommage a Brahms with the Owen Trio, a celebration of female composers with Julian Metzger and performances of the Fauré and Saint-Saëns piano quartets with the Bochmann Trio.
An honours graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, he won many prizes and awards culminating in the Queen’s Commendation for Excellence and the Peter Pears Accompaniment Prize, adjudicated by Pears himself. Paul was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music in 1996, a discretionary award given to past students in recognition of their contribution to the music profession. ‘perhaps the most soulful concert I have ever listened to in my life.
