Perfect Lodge accommodation, setting, staff and weather – Jean R
We have now stayed twice at Brantwood. Each time has been a special holiday with comfortable accommodation and excellent food we ordered from the cafe en site and some lovely walks with very good weather in October both years.  – Critchley family
Glorious views from the Lodge! We enjoyed the wood burner and amazing gardens and house. A week pass for the Coniston ferry is a must and the walk from Torver to Coniston is perfect for young families. We would truly recommend Brantwood to others. – Wheeler family
Very impressed with the standard of accommodation. Had a lovely few days, with views to die for. We will be back! – Fenny family
A lovely, peaceful stay and a great opportunity for the family to be together. A beautiful house and beautiful views – H Jenkins

History

The Lodge is an extraordinary retreat steeped in history and nestled within the breathtaking grounds of our estate. Construction commenced at the end of 1872, with the old stable block making way for this architectural masterpiece. It was commissioned by John Ruskin, as a home for his esteemed valet, Frederick Crawley. Ruskin’s keen eye and meticulous attention to detail ensured that every aspect of the lodge was crafted with care.

From the moment you arrive, you’ll be captivated by the Lodge’s unique charm. Ruskin’s thoughtful design incorporated angle windows strategically placed to capture the awe-inspiring views that surround the estate. As construction drew to a close in the following spring, a delightful quirk of Ruskin’s nature was revealed. In his excitement, he had overlooked the inclusion of a front door. Ever the imaginative visionary, he decided to adorn the lodge’s front wall with a vibrant vine instead.

Today, the Lodge stands as a testament to Ruskin’s artistic sensibilities and enduring legacy. Immerse yourself in its rich history as you step into each room, where whispers of the past and stories untold await. The Lodge offers a seamless blend of modern comfort and timeless elegance, providing you with a truly unique and unforgettable experience.
