Absence and Presence

Stephen’s approach to painting is very tangible. He makes his own paints by hand in order to control its behaviour and its appearance. Sometimes he wants a painting to look older than it is, or catch the light in different ways, or change the colour throughout the day and he achieves this through the use of various pigments, vegetable and animal products.

He says of his work “My work comes from a world where nothing lasts very long, where we have to replace everything on a regular basis; where shops are open one day and gone the next; trees are being cut down, town centres are vanishing….I like to acknowledge what we have right now…”

During his career Stephen has worked with various artists groups both in this country and abroad, in particular Spain and Poland. A highlight was working with Damien Hirst.

10.30am to 4.00pm, Wednesday to Sunday : 1st January until 11th March 2012
10.30am to 5.00pm, Daily: 12th March until 11th November 2012

Admission is included in the garden ticket.
