Flowers at Brantwood: Watercolour Workshop

Due to popular demand for this course in 2016, we will be running it again in 2017 – Friday 7th July & Friday 11th August.

A one day hands-on workshop to explore some techniques that Sally uses when painting flowers with watercolour. Time in the gardens with the flowers, with huge views across Coniston Water in a peaceful and calming setting. Painting in the airy loft house studio with large vases of cut flowers.

Materials: Sally will supply; Kardi paper, beautiful hand made paper from southern India and gorgeous for   using with watercolour; cartridge paper; artists masking fluid; water jars; tissues and charcoal. Please bring with you, if you have them, your own watercolours and brushes; palette for mixing colours, ceramic is preferable, an old plate will do. Sally will be bringing three different kinds of watercolours to review.

We begin the day by creating some timed sketches of the flowers in the arrangement. It concentrates the discipline of looking and seeing. We work with charcoal and touches of colour on the cartridge paper. We will review the work as a group and Sally will demonstrate the use of the artists masking fluid and some simple colour mixing. There are several kinds of watercolours available that participants can experiment with.

11am  Flower and plant selection/identification.   A walk around the gardens, if it’s raining please bring a hooded rain coat and walking boots or wellies. If it’s dry and warm enough, we will spend some time in the garden drawing. Back in the studio, select flowers from the vases. Each participant should think about what information their choice has for its use and benefits. There are flowers that are large, exotic, stunning and joyful to have in our homes and gardens, there are flowers that are delicately beautiful, there are wild flowers and there are flowers that are medicinal and soothing to our wellbeing.

1pm lunch – A tasty lunch is available in the Brantwood café. Participants can bring their own packed lunch.

2pm afternoon.  Painting continues through the afternoon and Sally will give one to one time with each participant during this time.

4.30pm.  Review and clear up  A review of the achievements of the day.
