We're renovating our cafe! In the meantime our tempoary tearoom is up and running.

Brantwood Café (Soon to be The Terrace) opened on 15th June 2015, we have been offering a family friendly menu with a tempting range of freshly prepared snacks and light meals, homemade cakes and cookies to visitors here at Brantwood.

Housed in the former stables at Brantwood, the café is full of character and history. One of the best views in the Lake District has to be from Brantwood Café’s terrace, overlooking Coniston Water to the fells beyond.

To improve the experience and increase our offering we are undergoing an extension into Ruskin’s coach house in addition to a renovation of the building.

Our temporary tearoom providing drinks and cake is located in the Severn Gallery (up the steps to the right of the main building).

Built by John Ruskin for the Severn family it will provide a perfect setting with visitors being immersed in an ever-changing art exhibition. Currently an exhibition of photographs on canvas and paper by Andy Mortimer and Rod Taylor, entitiled “to stay what is fleeting”.

History

The Grade II listed coach house in which the café occupies dates from 1881-2. Built by John Ruskin the building incorporated loose boxes and stalls as well as accommodation for the coach driver. The construction was a considerable undertaking with hundreds of tons of loose white clay having to be removed before construction.

Following the purchase of the estate by John Howard Whitehouse and the formation of the Brantwood Trust the coach house became the home of a café catering to the visitors to the main house. Originally run by the trust the café was leased out in 1991 giving rise to the ‘Spinning Jenny’ later ‘Jumping Jenny’ business. As of June 2015 the café management was taken back by the trust.
